The suite, piece by piece

What an invitation asks you to decide

Whether it is one card for a birthday or a full wedding suite, the same questions come up in roughly the same order. These are the ones this site is organised around.

  • The invitation

Who is hosting, what the occasion is, the date, time and place, and how formal the wording should be. The card sets the tone for everything sent with it.

  • The details card

Directions, accommodation, dress, a website for anything that will change. Whatever does not fit on the invitation without crowding it goes here.

  • The reply

A reply card with its own envelope, a postcard, or a link to answer online. Each asks something different of the guest and of the person counting replies.

  • Paper and printing

Card weight, finish, and the printing itself, from flat digital print to letterpress and foil. The choice changes how the card feels in the hand and how long it takes to make.

  • Size and envelopes

A card has to fit its envelope, and the envelope has to go through the post. Square and unusually stiff envelopes can cost more to send than a standard one.

  • Timing

Design, proofs, printing, delivery and posting each take time, and guests need enough notice to reply. Working back from the date is what keeps the order from becoming a rush.

Three ways to send one

Printed by a service, printed at home, or sent on screen

A printing service

You design online or upload a finished file, approve a proof, and the cards arrive printed and trimmed. This is usually where the choice of paper and finish is widest, and where the wait is longest.

Worth comparing: paper stock, proofing and delivery time.

Printing at home

A design tool, a good printer and card stock that suits it. Fast, and easy to reprint, but limited by what a home printer can feed and how it handles heavy card.

Worth comparing: what the tool exports and the printer accepts.

A digital invitation

Sent by email, message or link, often with replies collected for you. Quick and easy to update, though some occasions and some guests still expect a card.

Worth comparing: reply tracking and how the design reads on a phone.

When they arrive they will cover design tools and printing services against the questions above, in words rather than scores. Until then, the page about us explains what the site covers and how it is written.
